Description
The Casket by Andy Brown is an 8th century treasure chest with a rich history. Made from whalebone, its front, back, sides and lid are decorated with runic inscriptions, Latin text and images from various religious and mythical traditions. Each rune has a unique sequence of images, which the poet used as inspiration to write poems about his surroundings. In this collection, Brown explores the layered histories of the River Teign and its surrounding area through a multilevel technique of 'translation', where ancient symbols are reinterpreted in modern English. Through this innovative approach, Brown captures the essence of his local environment, weaving together past and present in a unique and thought-provoking way.
