Dynamic poet and performer Douglas Kearney brings together two American folk tales in Buck Studies. This long mash-up combines the stories of Herakles and Stagger Lee, exploring themes of atonement, violence, and identity. By reworking these narratives, Kearney examines the ways in which language reflects our experiences of race and history. Kearney's work is characterized by its use of multicultural voices and its engagement with the concerns of contemporary black life. His poetry often explores the tensions between form and content, as he draws on a range of influences including gangsta rap and the murder ballad. A poet, performer, librettist, and professor, Kearney teaches at California College for the Arts and resides in Altadena, California. This is his third poetry collection, following earlier works that have appeared in anthologies such as Role Call: A Generational Anthology of Social and Political Black Art & Literature.
