Description
Borne is a novel by Jeff VanderMeer that tells the story of two humans and two creatures. In this world, a young woman named Rachel survives as a scavenger in a ruined city half destroyed by drought and conflict. She finds Borne, a strange and charismatic being who reminds her of the marine life from her birthplace, now lost to rising seas. Rachel takes Borne home despite Wick's wishes, and he begins to learn about the world and grow attached to Rachel. As she cares for him, Rachel starts to see beauty in the desolation around her and feels a protectiveness towards Borne that she can ill afford. The novel explores themes of survival, attachment, and the human relationship with nature. In this post-apocalyptic landscape, Borne's existence is precarious, and any weakness can be fatal. Yet, against all odds, Rachel finds herself drawn to him, and their bond becomes a source of comfort in a world that seems determined to destroy them.
