Description
Beyond Expectations: Exploring Identity in the Diaspora Onoso Imoagene examines the complex identities of second-generation Nigerian adults living in the United States and Britain. She argues that these individuals forge a distinct notion of "black" identity, one that diverges from traditional African American and Black Caribbean perspectives. Through over 150 interviews, Imoagene sheds light on how race, ethnicity, class, globalization, transnationalism, and national context intersect to shape self-perception. This nuanced exploration reveals the intricate ways in which these individuals navigate multiple identities, balancing racial status, diasporic Nigerian ethnicity, pan-African identity, and connections with fellow immigrants. By delving into the experiences of second-generation Nigerians, Imoagene provides a rich understanding of how identity is formed and negotiated in the context of transnational migration.
