Description

Tokyo, 1938. A group of amateur classical music enthusiasts meet regularly at the Cultural Centre to rehearse. Among them is Yu, an English teacher, and three Chinese students, Yanfen, Cheng, and Kang, who have stayed in Japan despite the growing tensions leading up to war. Their rehearsal is abruptly interrupted by soldiers, and the young musicians are taken away, suspected of plotting against their country. Yu's violin is broken during the arrest, and his 11-year-old son Rei is left alone. He hides in a wardrobe as the soldiers search for him, but is eventually discovered by Lieutenant Kurokami, who instead of turning him in, gives him Yu's broken violin. This event has a profound impact on Rei's life. Akira Mizubayashi's novel explores themes of memory, displacement, and impossible grief, two topics that are central to his work. The book is a delicate and nuanced exploration of the human experience, where art and music play a crucial role in shaping our lives.
