619 Squadron was formed in April 1943 as part of Bomber Command's expansion efforts. With its high number, it reflected the fact that it was a brand new unit with no history behind it.

The squadron began operations in June 1943, playing a key role in the Ruhr offensive and subsequent bombing campaigns against Italy, Peenemünde, and Berlin. It participated in numerous raids, including the devastating four-raid series against Hamburg under Operation Gomorrah.
