Description
RAF Bomber Command Profiles 514 Squadron Formed in September 1943 as part of the expansion of Bomber Command, 514 Squadron served with distinction in the RAF's No. 3 Group until August 1945. Initially operating from RAF Foulsham, the squadron relocated to its permanent base at RAF Waterbeach, Cambridgeshire, in December 1943. The squadron played a pivotal role in softening up strategic targets ahead of D-Day and supporting the Allied bridgehead in Normandy, before reverting to attacks on German infrastructure. Its aircrew members came from various countries, including Britain, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. The unit's bravery and ingenuity were evident in its use of blind bombing techniques, culminating in the deployment of the highly accurate Gee-H equipment. Despite its relatively short service life of just 18 months, 514 Squadron made a significant contribution to the war effort, with nearly 15,000 tons of bombs dropped during 222 operations. The squadron suffered heavy losses, with 90 aircraft lost due to enemy action or crashes, and 437 members giving their lives in the cause of freedom.
