Description
106 Squadron: A History
Formed in June 1938 as a bomber unit at Abingdon, 106 Squadron initially operated Hawker Hinds before transitioning to the Fairey Battle and later the Handley Page Hampden. Its operational war began on September 9th, 1940, with night bombing campaigns against Germany.
The squadron's serviceability improved significantly under the leadership of W/C Guy Gibson, who introduced innovative tactics such as equipping his aircraft with cameras to enhance bombing accuracy. The Avro Manchester and later the Lancaster became the backbone of the squadron's operations, with a focus on precision and effectiveness.
