Description

Er Zhang's First Mountain is a poignant exploration of death and life, family and tradition. The poet embarks on a journey to her ancestral village in Shanxi province, where she performs a ritual burial for her paternal grandparents, weaving together multiple generations and ancient belief systems.

The narrative arc of the story builds towards a tragic climax, as Zhang Er navigates the complexities of her heritage and the passage of time. This is the poet's third book to be published by Zephyr Press, featuring an introduction about the collaborative process between Zhang Er and Joseph Donahue that rendered the work into English.

With its moving exploration of mortality, identity, and cultural heritage, First Mountain is a powerful and thought-provoking read for anyone interested in poetry and Asian American experience.
