The Empire of Trebizond was founded in 1204 by brothers Alexios and David Komnenos. This successor state to the Byzantine Empire lasted until its fall to the Ottoman Turks in 1461. Despite being a fascinating topic, few Trapezuntine writings have survived. This volume presents translations from the Greek of two crucial primary sources: On the Emperors of Trebizond and Encomium on Trebizond. Published together for the first time, these texts provide valuable insights into the history of the ruling dynasty and the city's foreign relations. The Encomium by Bessarion offers a unique perspective on Byzantine identity and the city's role as a major trading hub along the Silk Road.
